Cutting Propane Tanks With Water In Them

Post by Frank_Cox » April 12th, 2022, 8:22 am

Hey guys!
I have a full video series coming Soon to our YouTube channel but wanted to post this here?

I get asked a lot if you can cut tanks with a plasma cutter with the water still in it.

Think about water tables on CNC Plasma tables.

So the short answer is yes but you need to keep a couple things in mind.

First, it’s electric and there’s gonna be A LOT of water come out so go way overboard to make sure your environment is safe.

No cords on the ground, no bad cords, tools are not in the area, you’re not near your building, etc.

Secondly, it’s gonna be very important the direction of your cut.

Make sure you start at the bottom and work up one side, then go back to the bottom and go up the other side.

Thirdly, make a plunge when you start the second part of your cut.
In other words start your arc just before you plunge in especially if using a drag tip.
This will prevent consumable damage.

Lastly make sure to leave a little dross or a couple small 1/16 tabs so the water doesn’t rush out like it did in my pics.

On this one I didn’t do that and you’ll notice I got some water in the torch.

Not a huge deal but if you don’t let the plug fall out of there you have time to grab the sledge and knock it out to protect your torch.

Hope this helps!

Full video Coming as soon as I can get all this footage edited!
