Metal prep?

Post by p3ripperfw » February 19th, 2017, 3:47 pm

What are you guys wiping things down with before paint? I've used acetone in the past to remove oils but that could get expensive as fast as it dries. Saw something in some auto body forums mentioning wiping down with phosphoric acid to help with rust prevention prior to paint.

I use acetone or gun wash thinners. Gun wash is usually a bit cheaper, it's for washing out spray guns.

Also, you want it to evaporate fast, moisture is the enemy of paint. :kewl:

I normally use xylene, always have. Phosphoric acid is normally used to stop an already rusty issue I believe. I used in on a truck frame that had battery acid rusting it away. It stopped it and the truck is still on the road 10 years later

I guess I'll have to see what condition the metal is in when I'm ready to paint. The smoker is being built outside so I will just have to see how much rust build up I get by the time it's done.

In my opinion, I would actually rather prep slightly rusted material then rust free oily material. Not saying I want it pitted. Just a light surface rust.

Scotch brite pad and acetone or denatured alcohol. Then I paint with high temp rustoleum. It's a heavy oil base that has fantastic self leveling abilities. I usually mix a little hardner in the batch.

Sounds good Tom. There will definitely be some rust to deal with. I plan on painting the trailer with rustoleum hammered and the pit with that paint you mentioned.
