Building From Africa

Post by nyingmeh » March 6th, 2022, 6:20 am

:ymhug:
I am a huge bbq fan. I experienced Texas style bbq when I visited my brother once and I've been obsessed about bbqs and smokers.
I am building my first smoker, it's a daring one 33inches diameter by 96 inches long cook chamber.
The firebox inside is 30 inches x 30 inches x 30 inches and outside is 34 inches x 34 x 34. I have an all round insulation space of 2inches which I've filled with insulating fiber.
I am trying to do a hybrid, reverse flow and offset in one, so I will have 2 chimey openings which I can interuse depending on what configuration I want.
The chimney is will be 8 inches wide and 27 inches long.
I did all the research I could but really could not understand the whole firebox throat size estimates. I hope to God what I've done is right.
I used .24 inch thick sheets to make my cylinces; two of them as they come in 4 x 8 ft sheets and that's the thickest I can manage to work with. I searched around for large propane tanks but those were not easily available.
So here's to it, some pictures... am reay hopping this works.

Am not sure how to go about the air intake thing for an insulated firebox.
Any advice please.

I've never built an insulated firebox, but I don't think people insulate the door, do they? If you insulate the door, you're going to have to seal off the intake from the insulation, otherwise you could just have your intake in the door straight in.

Great work so far, well done :)

If you use the pit calculator on here, put your numbers in for the firebox, cook chamber and chimney sizes and it will give you the exact throat size you need.

You can never have too many hammers.

Looks great!
Keep up the great work!

@hogaboomer I usually do not insulated my firebox doors especially if there is an air inlet in the door.
Biggest reason is the doors tend to twist or warp.
