More baby steps today. Got the exhaust damper finished and installed. Intake and damper installed. Finished fully welding door flanges. Finished fully welding firebox end cap.

Thermos and bungs will be in tomorrow. Paint will be in this week some time. Grate and baffle material will be in this week. We’re on the home stretch.

Looking pretty good for a first build, my first one was pretty homely!

Thanks for all the kind words. Plugging along today. Got my “frank style” baffle tacked in. Grates framed out and installed. And braced the fb door.

Also picked up 1” ball valve for drain today, and my paint came in as well! We’re almost there. Gotta get the expanded on the grates. Move pull handle further forward. Mount grease drain, strip it and paint it!

I have a big annual Boston butt cook coming up for some of our high spending clients. Hoping to have it done in time to cook them on the new rig!

Side note. Any of you other flux core welders out there, what’s the best way to get that flux off after you tack something together in a bunch of inside corners?

I’ve had no issue on exterior surfaces as I can just wire brush them off and start laying full beads. But I’m stuff like those interior fb door braces, my brush won’t fit in the corners to clean stuff out. Is there a smaller brush or some other tool/technique that will make getting that stuff off of there so I can start my next bead cleanly?

Flux wire is horrible! They make tiny "toothbrush" sized wire brushes that might work for you. I have a small air grinder with a 1.5 inch flap wheel that works really good for tight places that my big grinder won't get to.

The minimal cost to convert to shielding gas is worth it just for the aggravation prevention alone! Tank, hose, regulator and a new tip and you are set...tell Santa your wishes!

I have the Forney easy weld 140. I don’t think it’s capable of gas. There’s no gas port to my knowledge anyway. But it’s bell a hell of a little welder so far. Super splattery at first, but after I changed to a diff brand of wire, it dialed in super easily.

I use flux core, mainly as I started off being restricted to welding outdoors. I still like it even though clean up is sometimes a pain as you see. :)

For inside corners I use one of these, either in the drill or if a really tight corner with the air die grinder.

Also, if your welder is like the one I saw in some photos the gas port looks like the brass orifice just above the power core inlet.

Thanks! I’ll have to snag some of those brushes. Do you happen to have a link?

And I have the basic easy weld 140. The 140”mp” is the one with the brass gas hookup. Mine was about half the price of that one

I'm in the UK, so any link I know will be pointless for you Stateside.

Try a search on "end brush wheel" at some of your HW stores like ACE or Harbor Freight. I even took the time to spell "Harbour" incorrectly too. ;)

Thanks fellas! 2 coats on. Handle fixed. Grates finished. Just unloaded it at the house. Plan is to get up Saturday, bake the paint on. Season the interior. And figure out how it runs/cook all day long. Lfg!
