Can't remove propane tank valves

Post by Northsmoke44 » April 20th, 2020, 6:29 pm

Does anyone have any tricks or cautionary words of wisdom for removing valves from a propane tank? Any products help break up fused threads?

This should come without saying but make sure that it doesn't have any pressure in the tank before you start. A really big pipe wrench or a pipe wrench and a cheater pipe is best way to get it out.

I used a pipe wrench with a 6' cheater pipe to break them loose. I'm glad it was still strapped to the trailer. That crap was crazy tight.
Do you know how to besure it don't have any pressure in it??

If you are going to cut out the bungs and patch them, now might be time to break out the torch.

Strap the tank to a post or tree with two ratchet straps & then the advice given above. It’ll be out in a jiffy.

This forum is great. This is the type of tank I have so the valves are set in behind the shroud there. I think I'm going to need a socket with extension. Cheater pipe looks like the way to go though!

You can cut the shroud off without harming the tank. I used a 4.5" angle grinder then took the valves out. ImageImageImageImage
