30" DIA RF Smoker

Post by Buggs » December 10th, 2020, 11:03 am

Good morning,
I'm looking to start a build. Please see attached drawing, looking for suggestions and comments as to FB size and BP location. I think i used the calculator correctly for all the sizes.

Thanks

I didn't check your dimensions, I just looked over the layout of everything. It looks like the top of the FB is higher than the BP if I'm seeing it correctly. I would drop it down a couple of inches below the BP and install a shadow plate above the throat about an inch lower than the BP. It'll really help avoid a hot spot right at the throat.

Also, if you don't have room to move it down, possibly because it may raise the CC higher than you want, you may be able to make the FB a few inches deeper and shorten the FB as Big T suggests. Which essentially does the same thing. You wanna keep the firebox Cu. In. within the SB calc specs as close as possible.

REVISED FIRE BOX LOCATION.jpg
Is this a better design/location? How large should the shadow plate be?
I lowered the top of FB to be 2" lower then BP.

Yes. As long as your throat opening is large enough to meet the calculator requirements.
Having your baffle above the FB like that will mitigate all that extra heat coming from the hot steel of the FB.
Your shadow plate should extend at least 12" past the FB throat opening. It protects from the radiant heat coming through the throat.
