New Build has started mini GF +6”

Post by BurnBern » July 4th, 2019, 8:12 pm

Hi a little while back I bought the mini GF plans from Frank and started the planning. I went along the route of getting the frame and the firebox CNC cut. I made a change in that i added 6” to the height of the Mini GF.

The cutting was pretty flawless and looked awesome. I’ve welded the frame together already and you will see it in the pics as I’m using it for a workbench to weld on.

I’ve pretty much almost finished the FB. I’ve just got the chute to weld on and to make a removable fire grate. Here are some photos as to the progress so far.

I wrote front on it as i nearly welded it the wrong way round LOL

Another pic of it and I made it so that it’s removable just in case it rusts out a few years down the line

Here is the transfer tube and the underside plate. I think that i might have an issue here in that the tube is 10mm short. I presumed that it was cut and bent to the size i gave the shop that cut and bent it. I did not measure it when i collected it but for some reason they cut & bent 2 transfer tubes for me. I might have to cut this one even shorter say 75mm and then the 2nd one cut it 85mm and weld it onto the fist transfer tube.

Part of the fun is solving the issues that always seem to pop up....

Is it too short in length or width? If lenght then just weld a 10mm plate on the end facing the opposite wall. If it is width then you might have to do a bit of creative welding to sort it out. Or take it back to your supplier and get them to remake it... don't fancy your chances there though. :D

Yeah taking it back to supplier there is no chance of that as I had it done about 3 months ago.
It is short in length so as you said I’ll just weld a piece on.

Is the transfer tube welded to the opposite inside wall?

Generally not a bad idea to weld it there for stability. Well I did on my DP.
And at the end of the day if it is a bit short I doubt it will create an issue as all the transfer tube does it transfer the heat along its width so you don't get a hot spot just inside the cook chamber. So if some of the heat comes out the end, not a biggie.

I would definitely weld it to the other wall. That transfer tube is heavy, give it all the support you can

Well the build is off to a start again.

I’m busy cutting the interior plates but had hit a snag. The bottom plate shows that it should be 22” long but the interior width of the back wall plate is 19”.
I’ve cut the interior plate and made the bends as per drawing but when fitting it it is 3” to long.
I’ve triple checked my frame measurements to the drawing and they are correct.
Is this an error on the drawings

I would shift it to the left so it sits on top of the bottom rail.

Hi all just an update. I’m almost done with my GF I will be posting some pictures soon. But a quick question what methods are you using to get your temp probes into the CC.

Most people put in a dedicated ‘pass-thru’. I used a short piece of 0.5 threaded pipe so have the ability to screw a cap on it when not I use.
