I wish I had those prices.
Some call the Central Valley of California the bread basket of the world. It is about 20,000 sq. miles in size. (about 285 miles long x approx.70 miles wide) much of which is farm and ag. fed by the snowpack from the Sierras. I have found out that much of our food is lower in price than many places in the US. But there is a lot of trade off living here too..
Yup, I would probably not survive your air quality issues. Seriously.

Well enjoy your benefits.

NEW WRAPPING/ MOPPING STATION- Solves the problem of losing too much heat in GF smoker:

Thinking about making a swing arm next to my furnace section, and attaching it to the frame. This way I can bust the door open quickly and pull out up to at least two expanded metal cook grates and wrap or mop with the doors closed. Which will save teh valuable heat/time.
Unlike my stick burner, which I can get back up to temp in a few minutes after opening to wrap or mop, My GF takes much longer, especially if I leave the door open and do the wrapping on the slides. I can drop 150 -200 deg F. in no time. Then it takes much longer to get back up to cook temp. I do have and external folding shelf, which I use for other stuff, and don't want to get greasy wrapping or unwrapping on that shelf. Also, I am one of those weirdo's that hate flies (grease =flies) LOL!! I am thinking about welding a bracket down low on the frame, with a swivel pole, and essentially building a couple of external expanded metal tray slides to attach to this pole, which I can swing behind my cooker when not in use, and will be out of the way (may be a double articulating arm) .
On a side note, I also have learned that by pushing my GF to the edge of my patio concrete (mine is a patio model) and by turning the door towards the grass, all grease falls on the grass and not on my finished patio. Then I just wash the grass down a bit where the grease falls (no flies haha!). I was making a bunch of grease spots on my concrete, which I will need to pressure wash this spring for sure.
I think the new swiveling external cook grate holder will be a nice feature for my current set-up. I will post pics when I get it done. I have some rough hieroglyphics that I have drawn up, but am too embarrassed to post, and too lazy to draw on CADD to make presentable. So I'll be building from my hand sketches after I verify a few dimensions. As and added bonus, I think I have all materials on hand back in my bone yard- :).

This is an interesting idea. What do you plan on putting underneath to catch grease dripping/ mop drippings?

Plan on letting it fall on grass for now.
GF door opens to grass, away from finished concrete..
The bigger issue is the heat loss at this point, but by turning the GF to the grass side and off of my concrete patio, and adding a swing arm as mentioned above, I kill 2 birds with one stone.
Could incorporate a removable drip pan below the swing arm I suppose.
Would do the pan as a separate project if I think it would be advantageous at some point.

For reals man! Its like a disease. I just finished this stuff this afternoon. Mini log rack for ash compartment to keep wood out of ash. A 3/4” plug to plug fan hole when fan isn't running ( went fancy). Plug to starve fire faster when I shut things down. A fan mount. A cord caddy. Also i noticed some ash on top of my grate as some have experienced. I cut out the ash grate section saving the frame, and beveled the edge of the 1/4” plate, and welded back up. That gives me 3/4” between coal grate.

Thanks fellas. Been enjoying working on this thing, and smoking stuff too.
Many of the ideas I have found on this forum from others experiences, and a few I dreamed up along the way.
Who knows, we may help someone else along the way in the future by posting up little stuff like this too!
Also, I'm Spatchcocking a few 16 lb turkeys tonight and trying a dry brine for a cook tomorrow.
So I'll see if the ash grate mod works as planned. plus turkey is good all of the time..
:D ^:)^

Also, in hindsight, I kinda wish I would have buried some insulated wiring in my CC and added a few oven light sockets as well . A lot of high temp sockets and bulbs on pretty cheap on amazon. Also a door switch. That way when the door opens the lights turn on. I noticed it gets vey dark inside of my CC. I am currently using a 2000 Lumen 20 volt battery light, which works but I get shadows. If I ever build another GF, I will likely be adding this feature. Probably cost an additional $50 (max) for wiring, two high temp sockets and bulbs, maybe less. But it would be a nice feature, and worth it IMO. It can still be done on my GF cooker, but everything would be exposed externally, and I would need to do some custom wire chase. Still
Exploring possibilities. A light kit would be a nice add option on Franks plans for his builds. with the option of 12v DC for trailer models or 120V for patio versions. Hind sight is 20/20.... No regrets, always learning!!

Maybe you could somehow use the 1”x1” tubing to feed the wiring through?

The light idea is pretty cool. Usually wear a hat with a light clipped to it when checking the meats on my smokers.

I would likely hole saw a couple of holes through the two skins and mount a socket inside the cc. then run wiring to the other side for another socket and make a hat section, or v-style wiring chase. an then another to a door switch and then to a 120v plug. Not a bunch of work, but it could be done cleanly even now. Project is on the back burner for now, but will be a nice feature if I get around to it. I did find all of teh parts required on Amazon however out of curiosity..

EXTERNAL ARTICULATING COOK GRATE RACK WITH SLIDES:
Bench fitting:
as mentioned a few posts up, when I go to wrap or mop, by the time I close the door, I lose at least 150° (F) heat. With my stick burner this isn’t an issue, I can open a few dampers and within 5 minutes I am back up to temp again. The GF is much slower to get back to temp. So my idea is to weld a base plate on the frame and bolt on this thing. It is on a pole and will swing behind the unit and out of the way when not in use. When in use I can swing it into position, lock it in place, open the GF door and pull a couple of grates out and set it on this "external cook grate rack" , and do my wrapping/mopping or whatever needs to be done. I still need to weld a few nuts and tee handles at the pivot points so that i can lock it into position and I won’t be chasing it around with a hot and heavy cook grate. I like to bench fit as much as possible and will drag out a stick welder and weld the base plate in position on our West Patio.. Lazy dudes find an easier way. lol!
Should be a nice feature for my current setup.

Thanks Dave, I will post up a few more pics once I get it installed. The material was out back in the bone yard exposed to the elements so it took a bit to get the oxidation off of it. I might hit it with a torch and throw linseed oil on it for the heck of it. Gives it a steampunk look!! I bought a gallon of linseed oil back when there was some posts about it here 6 months ago at Home Depot, and have been dying to use it. I did use some of it on my "Chicago Cutlery" wooded handle kitchen knives, I can't keep the wife and kids from washing them in the dishwasher and drying the handles out.
Auto-Dishwashers are really hard on wooden knife handles. The linseed oil resurrects the wood somewhat though.

MOPPING/ WRAPPING STATION COMPLETE:

I just finished my mopping/ wrapping station. Now I can open my door quickly and slide up to 3 racks out and onto this external rack. Then quickly close the door in order to save heat/recovery time/ and fuel. It knuckles in two spots so that i could mount it to the back side of the frame with mounting brackets. Then wrap it around the furnace section. It tucks away behind GF when done. When tucked away, there are no racks slid in place. The ones in the pics are the smoker racks. The slides will normally be empty, especially when tucked behind the smoker and not in use. I Might make a pan to fit the bottom slide to catch drippings. But for now I have been turning it around over the grass, and let it drip away. I Just spray down the grass to keep flies down. The grease was dripping on my patio concrete which will need to be pressure washed this spring..
I finished it all with linseed oil and a weed burner. Target temp @425°. I am very happy with the outcome!!

Thanks fellas
I think I’m about done with this thing. The problem is though, when Im cooking something, I think, “awe-man, this aint working too well, this would be better”. Then off I go adding more stuff!! Haha! This time I really think I’m done with this thing. The good thing about this little project is I had everything in the boneyard, so it only cost a little time and welding consumables..
