Question on putting the sheet metal on a gravity feed smoker doors

Post by Slingshot » April 2nd, 2021, 1:53 pm

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum and I am slowly working my way through my gravity feed smoker build, no plans other than what I drew up. My question is on adding sheet metal to the outside edges of the doors. Do most of you add sheet metal to outside edges of the doors or are you leaving the tubing bare and just blending in the corners where the front and back sheet metal is put on? Looking at it, i'm not sure what the benefit would be to adding metal to the edges. Thanks for any replies and i really enjoy seeing all the great builds.

I butted the sheet up square on my double pan GF, turned the heat up a notch and the wire feed down a bit to get penetration down to the tubing. Left a fairly nice corner.

Thanks for the reply, I'm debating whether it's necessary to cap the edges, but doing it the way you suggested may not be as bad as i was thinking. Did you cap the edges of the doors on your burner as well?

I think it really comes down to what look you want. Both ways will work and neither looks bad.

Thanks Dirtytires, that's kind of what I was thinking but I didn't find out after the fact that there was a specific reason to do it. Much appreciated!

I did not "cap" the edges. I welded up the frames and welded the large sheets in place. Welds will eventually get ground down for paint.
