First dp Gravity feed build

Post by Deano » May 21st, 2022, 8:44 am

Hi everybody,

Joined here and bought the plans just before Christmas but life (and many celebrations so at least a nice delay!) has been getting in the way.

Was originally intending to build by myself but it turned out my father in law is very good friends with someone with access to a CNC machine, autocad, cheap metal and a team of welders (aka I'm a very lucky man!).

Will be posting photos soon hopefully but in the meantime i have one question. My godmother is coming over from the States in a couple of weeks and along with some rubs (have only ever made my own, would like to try some 'professional' efforts) I may get her to bring the gasket tape for the smoker.

However I've seen two lavalock 1 X ¼ inch tapes that have similar product numbers but I don't know the difference.

One says it's for the vision grill and the product number 2501v. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N1QKCR2?

The other doesn't say it's for the vision grill but looks for all intents and purposes, the same. Product code is 250-1. https://bbqgaskets.com/lavalockr-1-x-1- ... 15-ft.html

Also a wildcard, the same dimensions but looks different, this one
https://bbqsmokermods.com/smoker-parts/ ... grill.html

Which gasket tape is the best choice of those?

Many thanks

I used the stuff from Amazon. It works fine, and it looks like in your case it is half price. Mine has been on my GF for almost 2 years and does not leak any smoke. They will need to add an !/8 spacer in the door when they weld the hinges on that way the 1/4" gasket will compress and seal. I usually pre-gap my door 1/2 the thickness of the gasket. They will likely know that already, but you need to let them know how thick the gasket is.
ie. if the gasket was 1/8" thick I would stick a piece of 16 gauge (1/16" thick) behind door to pre-gap etc...

Thanks for your thorough reply. I'll let him know but think he's pretty on top of everything. He'd already incorporated a removable grate for the chute in his plans when he was converting to metric, and that was before I'd had a chance to go over revisions I wanted to make from the plans I purchased 😀

Hey everybody, another question this time re: pit controllers. I seem to have narrowed it down to either heatermeater, aubergine 3615 or signal/billows.

At first I thought the heatermeater would be cheaper but given the price of components etc currently, it'll work out about the same as the other two mentioned, at least in the UK or Greece. What controllers did any of you go with? What CFM did you find you need to get it up to temperature (relatively) quickly? The billows allegedly has a 46 CFM which seems almost like overkill but I'm operating under ignorance as don't have a finished smoker yet.

Cheers

I use the flameboss 500/. The GF's do not need a ton of CFM to get up to and keep temp. At 100% fan speed, it puts out 21 cfm max, but it only goes that high until it hits temp, then backs off to 15-20% or less. I close the top damper down at least 75% closed to keep the heat after I hit temp.
Once at temp it Chugg's along at approx. 5-6 cfm, which is not much air volume at all

Thanks for the response, has made me go for the 20cfm auberins option.
