Throat going to cook chamber

]In the plans it calls for #9 expanded metal. If chute and fire box is made from 1/4 an 1/2 inch material…wouldn’t that need to be just as thick ? I made this from 1/4 material with 1/4 spacing but I’m concerned ash build up will stop air flow

I've seen a few guys that done something similar with their builds so it's a possibility.
