Wahoo, the search is over!

Post by Squiggle » March 27th, 2016, 6:03 pm

So after a long search for a decent supply of some smokable wood I have found the mother load. I was really struggling to find anything around here when all there is to burn is eucalyptus & pine in great supply. I've been scrounging through friends fruit trees & buying wood chips & pellets to get through, but yesterday I caught up with a mate who runs a truffle farm down here & he told me they are just about to change over 25% of the 22,000 oak trees they have as they are getting too big & unmanagable. He told me I could take as many as I want cause they will just be burning them anyway, BOOYAA!! So I quickly cut one down & will be getting more whenever I want & they should be aged perfectly by the time I finish my mini GF. :strongbad:

Good for you Squiggle, it's funny how we sometimes take little things for granted such as wood, I live in the northern part of the United States where oak trees are everywhere and many Apple orchards that will let you take their prunings.

Oh there's plenty of wood down here in Tassie, logging is big business round here, but it's all useless for smoking. :BDHorse:

I'd stock up.....if properly stored, it should last 2-3 years before its past its prime. Great find!

I would recommend keeping it off the ground and covered to extend the cooking life.

Thanks RC, I'll have to build something to keep it in. :kewl:

I used 2 inch sq tubing, made a "ladder" about 10 feet long, and put sides about 5 feet high on the ends. It holds my wood about 6 inches off the ground and holds over a half cord of wood. I then made a simple frame of 1/2 by 1 inch tube and covered it in corrugated tin to keep the rain off.

Quick, simple and cheep. I build 2 as I get a better price on a full cord of wood.

A Truffle farm is a farm for truffle, those little really expensive things the French use to garnish creamy food, like pasta sauces. The truffles are a fungus that grows in the root systems of inoculated oak trees, they look like mummified testicles to me, lol. =))
Truffles are worth heaps, about $1300AU per kilo, I have a dog that hunts truffles when they are in season & she earns pretty good money doing it.

Bottom line is that I get free oak trees to smoke with!! :strongbad:

This is a pic of some truffles.
