Ribs & FB Grate

Post by Barrion2018 » May 8th, 2022, 3:32 pm

My post more than likely belongs in another form, but the "Smoker Design and Construction" form is locked. Can anyone tell me why?

Anyway, I'm making some pork ribs today for wife for mother's day. and I'm using a FB grate for the first time. I watched one of Frank's old pod cast where he talks about ash on food an how the problem my be the result of not using a FB grate. After Frank explained how much better you can maintain your temps and burn less wood, along with getting less ash into the CC, I decided to give it a try.

I'm 2 -1/2 hrs into my cook, and I am amazed on how much less wood I'm using, and cleaner smoke when I add another split. Again, I have used a lot less wood, and longer time in-between adding the next split, not to mention steadier/more consistent temps just by adding a FB grate.

I know this isn't anything new to all of you. But for me as a beginer, I'm amazed at adding something simple as a grate in FB would be such an improvement to my fire management and cooking temps.

Thanks Frank for that info!!

The Smoker Design and Construction page is just there to direct you to a specific sub-forum. FB grate is always a good idea.

If it's tourist season, how come I can't shoot 'em?

One of my first smokers used charcoal and always keeping a lit basket of charcoal ready to add was a complete pain. I remember the first time I learned about the minion method, it was life changing!

Thanks for sharing, and glad the cook turned out.

This set up cooked this 21# brisket and two butts. It has a burn time of 12 hours with this layout. I can add more snake for a longer cook if needed.....so easy to run.

....the brisket is tied up to make it an even thickness.
