That's a real shame. Did you get on well with them before? Is it worth inviting them round now we're allowed the 6 outdoors for beers and BBQ, and show them round what you've done and how much work you've put into getting the smoke away?

I may be biased but I absolutely love the smell of wood smoke, combined with the hint of meat aroma I dunno what folk complain about. Unless they are one of those v**** types. I'm not even going to type that as it's a swear word in this house. ;)

Reasonably well yes, the old boy always needs to moan about something, be it the dog next door barking, recent roadworks etc. So i'm taking it with a pinch of salt, if he wants to make a thing of it then i'm happy to play that game. 14hr brisket on its way :D and also ask him to kindly get his garage off our land on which it was partly build before we moved in. But I'd rather avoid the nuclear option at this stage :)

Nope not a vegi, at least he claimed to have eaten (and enjoyed) the side of ribs we gave them a few weeks ago.

I feel like that's the ancient rite of hospitality - if he eats your que, he can't complain about the smoke.

So... it turns out after speaking with a chimney specialist it's too small (internal cross section area). So if I want to stop it smoking out the front of the main BBQ I will need to rebuild the chimney wider. (I'd even tried to use a spinning cowl which helped but wasnt perfect).

Cosmetic tiling has started but on hold due to the weather.

Glad for the update BigPete. Sorry to hear about the chimney issues. Are you going to redo it?

Sorry to hear about the chimney issues of this vertical smoker. Always read reviews before buying any smoker.

Thanks guys, it cooks pretty well though takes a good 1hr+ to get warm, still learning it and trying different things. Struggling with mould when not in use due to the climate here - was thinking a quick spray of vinegar or something natural should kill off the bacteria without nasty chemicals?

I'd just like to thank everyone here for all the help with this project! :)

Mold is definitely a concern and can cause real health issues. Maybe check with a local health department and see what they recommend to control it.

Awesome looking project!

Ha you have wayyy too much faith in the Scottish council! :)

I think if I can leave the cook chamber open the problem would go away but then the rain would flood it. Maybe some sort of umbrella over would allow ventilation without flooding. Temp fix is a raging fire :)

Very nice build. Looks awesome.
No input on the mold. We have been experiencing such a bad drought here that nothing grows..
I am pretty sure bleach @ 4:1 ratio would kill almost all of that stuff, but have never used in a cooker. Only our bath/shower area..
Maybe a weed burner on a 5 gallon bottle of propane... (a little tongue in cheek) lol!!

So I have a side burning, Vertical offset smoker, and a charbroil propane grill that I want to frame in and brick up for an outdoor kitchen. my questions are, has anyone enclosed either of these units, and if so how? I'm thinking of insulating them on the outside with 1-inch thick fire brick then framing around them and finishing with stone veneer and poured cement countertops. soliciting any and all ideas and pictures.

I cant say about your specific smoker, but I've learnt the hardway that not allowing room for heat expansion will result in cracks & breaks. (still functions though)
