Love this! I have 2 24” bell ends lying around. May have to try this. Is that the inner ring of the bell end that you used for the grate ring?

That's a piece of end cap that I had left over from the re-model of Big Tex, the monstrosity that's in my avatar pic. I cut the end caps off and replaced with flat plate to lose some weight and size.
I made some progress today, see if I can remember how to post a youtube on here:

Good work, Boomer. Do you have some sort of ratchet and pawl system to stop the grate falling under it's own weight, or just friction?

Friction. There's a spring on the outer end of the winding pipe that holds it in place.
